About Rabindranath Tagore

(He was born on May 7, 1861, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, was a famous Bengali poet, writer, musician, and philosopher. He came from a family of intellectuals and was homeschooled in his early years.

Rabindranath Tagore’s influence in fostering cultural exchange between India and the West, alongside his recognition as a preeminent creative force in early 20th-century India, was significant.

He wrote many books of poetry. Rabindranath Tagore is best known for his poetic work Gitanjali and Manasi. He received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1913, as the first Asian to receive the prize.

In 1883 he married Mrinalini Devi who was 10 years old at that time. They had five children. In 1890 he started managing his vast lineal estates in Shelaidaha. He was greatly influenced by the folksongs of Baul Lalon Shah. He also promoted his song.

1891-1895 was the sadhana period of Tagore, in which he wrote more than half stories of the three-volume, 84-story Galpaguchchha idolizing rural Bengal.

In 1901 Tagore moved to Shantiniketan and started an ashram and named it Path Bhavana.

In 1910 he wrote gitanjali and translated it into English in the year 1912. He got appreciation from people like William Butler Yeats and Ezra Pound for his marvelous poems.

In 1921 tagore with Leonard Elmhirst a famous agricultural economist founded institute for rural reconstruction which was later renamed as “Shriniketan”.

Rabindranath Tagore is linked with drama when he was 16 accompanied by his brother Jyotirindranath. He wrote his 1st drama the famous Valmiki Pratibha when he was 20 years old. Along with drama and poems he also wrote many famous short stories like Kabuliwala, Bhikarini,  Atithi and many more.

Rabindranath Tagore also wrote many amazing novels on social isssues lke “Gora” raising the isue of indian identity,”Ghare Baire” with the issue of jati. Many of his novels are taken by film makers to make movies on them.

Rabindranath Tagore is the poet of our legendary national anthem the “Jana-gana-mana” which was at first sung in the calcutta session of the Indian National Congress in 1911. And in 1950 this song was chosen as our national Anthem by the constituent assembly of the Republic India.
